What are injectable fillers?
•  Fillers such as Juvéderm™ or Restylane® are injected under the skin to smooth wrinkles and restore volume to certain areas such as lips and cheeks, adding fullness and definition with a natural look —reversing the signs of aging.
•  Juvéderm™ and Restylane® are made of non-animal hyaluronic acid gel and are collagen free.  Hyaluronic acid is a viscous substance found naturally under the skin and in the fluid of joints.  It acts as a protective substance in our bodies to help maintain moisture and volume.
•  Facial areas treated with fillers look very natural and maintain their shape and volume for nine to 12 months on average.
What can I expect during a Juvéderm™ or Restylane® treatment?
•  Dr. Gratton will inject small amounts of filler directly under your skin using a fine needle.  To minimize discomfort during the treatment, an anaesthetic cream may be applied or a local anaesthetic may be used before the filler injection.  An average treatment will take 30 to 45 minutes.
•  After any injection, it is possible to experience swelling, redness, pain, itching, discolouration, and tenderness which will not last typically more than one to two days.  The results can be seen immediately and it is quite possible to meet other people and return to work.
How do I prepare for a filler treatment?
•   Prior to your appointment, you will be counselled to avoid certain medications for 48 hours before your treatment because they may increase your risk of bruising.  Examples of such medications are aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (arthritis medications), and vitamin E.
•  You may want to bring foundation or cover-up make-up to apply as needed after the treatment.
Are there any post-treatment instructions?
•  Immediately after the treatment there may be slight redness, swelling, tenderness, or possibly an itching sensation in the treated area.  The inconvenience is temporary and will disappear in a day or two.  More specifically, after a lip treatment the swelling may last two or three days and the lips can look somewhat uneven during this time.  This means that the result immediately after treatment should not be looked upon as the final result.
•   Avoid touching the treated area, avoid exaggerated facial movements and vigorous exercise for six hours after the treatment.
What can I expect in the long term?
•  Additional treatments will be required periodically, generally within six to 12 months to maintain optimal results.
