What is Botox® Cosmetic?
•  Botox® Cosmetic is a brand name for Botulinum toxin (BT), a prescription medication. BT is injected into muscles to improve the look of lines in the face or neck.  It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles thereby reducing muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form in the brow, forehead, around the eyes and mouth, and the neck.
•  Muscles treated with BT usually start to relax within a few days and reach maximum relaxation within two weeks.  The effects of BT on muscles are completely reversible however typically last three to four months on average.
•  About three to four months after the first treatment, the effects gradually wear off.  Since the majority of patients are happy with the results of their therapy, they return for another treatment.
What can I expect during a BT treatment?
•  Tiny injections are performed personally by Dr. Gratton into the specific muscles causing lines and wrinkles.  An average treatment will take 15 to 20 minutes and is virtually painless.
•  There is always the possibility of developing a small bruise at the site of an injection but this is unusual.  As well there may be slight redness which usually dissipates after 10 minutes.  Most patients return to work after their treatment.
How do I prepare for a BT treatment?
•  Prior to your appointment you will be counselled to avoid certain medications for 48 hours before your treatment because they may increase your risk of bruising.  Examples of such medications are aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (arthritis medications), and vitamin E.
Are there any post-treatment instructions?
•  You will be advised not to rub but to gently work the treated muscles after your BT treatment (for example, frown, squint, etc.).  In addition you should not lie down for one hour or participate in vigorous exercise for four hours after your BT treatment.
What can I expect in the long term?
•  Most patients are very happy with the result of their BT treatment and wish to return after three to four months for another treatment before the effect has worn off completely because the subsequent treatment will usually last longer.
•  With regular BT treatments, the effects usually last longer and some patients report that after one or two years of regular treatments, the effect of BT lasts from six to 12 months.
